I still remember the heat of that night, not just the kind that clung to our skin after the game,
but the kind that settled in the air like smoke.
We had just won the state championship and the locker room of Red Valley University's rugby team pulsed with a kind of chaotic joy.
Sweat, laughter and beer mixed together in a haze of testosterone and pride.
Everyone was riding the high of the wind, everyone including me.
I sat on the bench, unwrapping the tape from my wrists.
My jersey clung to me like it didn't want to let go, soaked and torn at the shoulder.
Across the room, Derek Walsh, our captain, was laughing with two of the guys,
shirtless, holding a beer like a trophy. His body glistened under the cheap fluorescent lights and his smile had that rare ease
he only showed after a win. We were all adults there, grown men in our 20s,
pushing our bodies to the limit for a shared dream.
But the things we didn't say, the things behind the long stairs, the inside jokes, the playful jabs in the showers,
they lingered in the air just as much as the steam rising from our tired bodies.
Derek caught my eye once, maybe twice, and held it, not in a way that demanded anything.
Just long enough to say "I see you". I nodded but didn't smile. I never did.
